Royal Silk Class
Arrived at the airport around 10.30pm for this 12:45am departure. Long queue for economy check-in but only a couple waiting in the Royal Silk queue. I was checked-in by Menzies contract staff - efficient, but not in any way friendly or warm. Requested a seat change and the Menzies person had the desired seat released by the TG duty manager. Brief chat to the duty manager... and there was the warm, friendly service from TG at its best.
Walked through passport control (express pass) and then to the Koru Club. This lounge is always well presented and well stocked with snacks and drinks. The pool and foosball tables are nice touches!

I decided to check out the SQ lounge. Initially I was told I was, in fact, looking for the NZ lounge, but when I showed the ROP*G card and said I would like to use the SQ lounge the guy on the door happily admitted me. For what it's worth, the NZ Koru Club beats the SQ business class lounge hands down.
A little after midnight I boarded the plane and got settled into the comfy 772ER Royal Silk seats. The Royal Silk cabin was about 50% occupied but in economy they had a full house.
Menu, wine list and amenity kit provided as soon as I reached my seat. Kit was OK – not brand name goods inside, but fit for purpose.
Inflight experience was great. The cabin crew were very attentive and quick with the meal service (entirely appropriate given the 1am departure). If you want a safe meal choice on TG, go for the curry – nice meal with sufficient chilli! For desert, a small fruit sampler and a passionfruit cream cake – high in taste and high in calories ;-)
Menu - First serving
- # Smoked duck, salmon and scallop
- # Mixed salad with lemon grass dressing
- Prawn and Nile perch in white wine sauce, steamed scallops, pasta, carrot, broccoli
or
Lamb rogan josh with spinach, basmati rice, stir-friend Chinese cabbage
or
Braised chicken with creamy mushroom gnocchi duo, green pea, tomato
or
# Beef in red curry, steamed Thai hom mali rice, choy sum, carrot - # Fresh fruits, cheese tray
- Exotica passionfruit, raspberry sauce

Decided to get some shut eye about an hour after take off, and slept through until we were just over an hour out of BKK. I woke to find the breakfast service in full swing. No sooner had my eyes adjusted to the light than a flight attendant had a table cloth and breakfast tray before me. I opted for the frittata – good, without being great.
Menu - Second serving
- # Fresh fruits and fruit yoghurt
- # Vegetable frittata, tomato sauce, back bacon, mushrooms
or
Buttered milk pancake topped with blueberry compote, glazed banana
or
Stir-fried chicken with black mushroom, noodles garnished with egg, chilli, shallot, stir-fried vegetables
or
Noodle soup with fish and prawn balls - Fresh pastries

Hint: For a more spacious bathroom on the 772ER, avoid the bathroom at the front left of the plane (alongside the cockpit door – don't get them confused) and use the bathroom alongside the galley at the back of the Royal Silk cabin.
On time arrival into BKK.
