Passengers of size

In lecture last week we discussed the logic behind charging a passenger for extra weight they carry in checked baggage, but not for extra weight they carry on their person. Afterall, one kilo in luggage adds exactly the same weight to the plane as one kilo around the waist! Where's the fairness in charging one but not the other?

Against this background, this article caught my eye
