Koh Phi Phi Don

Time to relax and we headed to the Phi Phi Island Village Resort for six days of R&R in a little beachside bungalow. The resort is very peaceful and remarkably uncrowded (eventhough it was full, according to the staff).

We breakfasted each morning in the resort breakfast pavilion, but headed to the local village to dine each evening. The food is authentic, delicious, and about one quarter the price of resort dining. The local restaurant we preferred was A Roi Dee and we thoroughly recommend the fish with black pepper and garlic.

Our only complaint was the complexity in getting to this resort. After landing at HKT, we overnighted in Phuket Town (it’s a dump, don’t go there). Next morning we took a taxi to Rasada Wharf and then a ferry to Tonsai on Koh Phi Phi Don. From there Tonsai wharf we caught a shuttle to the hotel. On departing, the process reversed itself. Sure you’re relaxed after a few days at the resort, but the complicated transfer process isn’t the nicest way to end your stay.

A couple of notes on the ferry. (1) Buy your tickets before you get to the wharf (they're cheaper) and don't worry about a return ticket - they're available on Phi Phi for THB300-350. (2) The ferry is a death trap. On the upstairs deck there are ~250 seats with 2 narrow doors at the rear, and a door either side towards the back. If you're up front on this deck when the ferry goes down, your chances of getting out are low. Lower deck is even worse. My advice is to sit (or stand if necessary) on the upper deck near a doorway.

Setting transfer hassles aside, Koh Phi Phi Don is a beautiful island (although the main strip is very touristy). Enjoy your time in paradise.
