UA's new business class

I recently did the MEL/SYD/LAX rtn run on UA and, I've gotta say, the new international business class seats are GREAT! UA have scored! They've gone from one of the worst long haul business class seats to one of the best!

Seat control is just a fraction high for my liking and I'm 6' so I guess for a shorter person it would be even less convenient:

Upper deck cabin looking aft, and main cabin looking forward:

Reasonable privacy in the full recline mode:

The interesting thing is that there's a significant difference in pitch between the upper and lower decks! The hemisphere magazine is the reference point - downstairs, an additional five inches. Main deck seats get slightly deeper footrests and a little more headroom.

Upper deck:

However, the upper deck seat pitch isn't really an issue unless your 6' 2" or more. It does make it a little more tricky getting in and out of your seat (but that's no big deal unless you're short, I suppose). I still prefer the upper deck because I get to store all my stuff in the side bins... it also feels a bit more clubby than the main deck.

There are two improvement opportunities remaining (and it's a pity UA didn't consider these):
  1. Mood lighting - gently changing colours (deep reds, to blues and greens) really does create a soothing environment. This lights on, lights off business is just too abrupt.
  2. The iPod connector requires a proprietory cable and plug. Why not just go for the USB option? Hasn't anyone at UA learned the Empower lesson?
Any other experiences with UA's new business class?

PS. Service on UA? It's the same as always. You really can get people who personify the "friendly skies". Then, you can get bitter old dragons with an attitude to match. I guess that's a consequence of unionisation and staffing based on seniority. It's a pity UA can't sort this out.
